Born
in Macon Georgia, Craig Bennett
became "that kid that drew all the time". Never able
to let an inspiration go quietly, he had to exploit his interests
until he had exhausted himself (and others). At 17 he moved to
Athens to study art at the University of Georgia. His desire to
create continued. He played in bands, (Craig is also a great
singer/songwriter) bought records, and sometimes even went to
class.
After
finishing school, he started working in the film industry but
continued to paint. Although, he was unsure of where his work
was heading. Craig's subject matter has been the female face since
art school "simply because I like to draw eyes, lips
and hair", he says. "I've had a fascination with urban
settings for a long time as well. The two together (female
face and city) create a certain tension....(now I can't paint
one without the other)". But it wasn't until a sketchy, half
finished style emerged that he felt comfortable showing his work.
He believed he had overworked previous paintings - losing "that
rough, free, sketchy look" that had always appealed to him.
His approach to "free up" his figures and cityscapes
has continued for several years now, creating numerous acrylic
and charcoal paintings.
Craig
is an artist in every sense of the word, from painting,
to making music, (he's just released his 4th CD entitled "Faster
Forward") to writing poetry and short films..
